Yoga is a five-thousand year old practice that originated in India. Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates during the World War to help rehabilitate soldiers.
Joseph Pilates based many of his moves from yoga. But his system focuses mainly on the core (the back and abdomen) and it is a purely physical practice. Yoga on the other hand, is an orthodox philosophy that unites the mind, body and spirit. I always encourage my students to treat their classes like “a meditation in motion”.
I personally like yoga better, because it benefits me not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.
