Yoga Mad

Yoga Mad

Choosing a yoga retreat over a popular holiday resort is no longer an unusual practice among westerners. When we say yoga we often relate it with great physical condition, stress relief and good health, and it’s true, although one cannot render or grasp the meaning of this ancient art from a simple definition. A yoga retreat is the place where the practitioner do yoga in a social setting specific to a stress-free environment. It has in fact become a common practice for people to choose a yoga retreat instead of a popular holiday destination.

Going to a yoga retreat is not just an opportunity to feel completely stress-free, but also a chance to meet people with similar preoccupations and share experiences with other yoga enthusiasts. Plenty of ads for yoga retreat locations will promise you an incredible well being and great fun, but what we need to add here is that inner harmony is what matters most. If you get to a yoga retreat then leave not only work and stress behind, but all the negative emotions, the worries and the fears too, otherwise, you’ll see absolutely no difference at all.

Get in contact with a yoga retreat organizer and ask for answers to all of your questions, plus you can also check online for further info. Clothes, weather, local customs, facilities on the premises and many other issues should be sorted out before the payment for the yoga retreat. For instance, keep in mind the fact that the accommodation varies from retreat to retreat: it could be like camping or it may resemble resorts. The best advice can come from a yoga retreat organizer who can point out whether you need to take special stuff with you or not. Comfortable clothes, yoga mats and bathing suits are must-haves and they should be packed first.

The time extent you get to spend in a yoga retreat depends on the package you select or the budget flexibility you have. Most of the food you’ll have is vegetarian but highly nutritious, and people who need tips to improve their diet will learn lots of ways to promote health through quality food. And last but not least, there is no surprise that in a yoga retreat you will get to practice yoga for several hours a day, so you’d better be ready for it.

How To Do a Noble Pose

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

You might recognize the Noble Pose as the dreaded “sit-and-reach” from your childhood gym class. But while that was an exercise in pre-pubescent humiliation, this is a time-honored and well-respected yoga posture. See the difference?

India: Steps to Prevent “Yoga Piracy”

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009
Found this interesting news story on Global Voices, thought I would share it with you as I found it interesting. Enjoy……
clipped from globalvoicesonline.org

Yoga By SunsetIndia has organized a team of researchers and scientists to identify and record all ancient yoga positions (or asanas) in an attempt to prevent people living in other countries from patenting this existing knowledge.
Some refer to this practice as yoga piracy, where people claim patents and/or copyrights on yoga postures and techniques found in ancient texts that originate in India. For example, according to an article in The Telegraph, there have been more than 130 yoga-related patents, 150 copyrights and 2,300 trademarks in the United States alone.

Yoga For Kids

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009
Yoga Mad

Yoga Mad

Yoga for kids is generally considered not an educational formula but rather a way of showing children ways to cope with stress. If in India children receive yoga classes at very small ages, in the West, parents make the choice whether to train their kids or not. The very good part about it results from the possibility of the children to develop self-awareness and spirituality more quickly and better than a grown-up. Yoga for kids brings body and mind control as well as it helps create good behavioral patterns.

Presently, yoga for kids is offered either as part of school curricula or as an independent special class activity. Just like dance and karate courses, yoga for kids can be easily squeezed in the child’s daily program. Therapeutic studies indicate that yoga has brought the germs of recovery in the case of children who suffer from hyperactivity or attention deficit. Since with these disorders, kids constantly crave movement, yoga helps to the channeling of these impulses in non-destructive ways. Calm, balance and self-confidence are the great benefits to result from yoga-for-kids programs.

Moreover, with yoga, kids learn how to conquer victories over mind and body and how to peacefully cooperate. The anatomical flexibility specific to young age makes postures a lot easier to perform; adults on the other hand need to work a lot more to achieve enough mobility to practice yoga. Although the physical part is not that challenging, a major obstacle comes from meditation and relaxation, particularly because kids enter such states more difficultly. Therefore, visualization remains the main way of helping young and grown up yoga trainees learn how to relax.

The posture names in yoga for kids classes are often very suggestive if we think of the fact that they are better learned when they mean something. Thus, instead of performing asanas they will make a bridge, a mountain, a cat, a dog or a cobra, to name only a few. Moreover, the practice of yoga for kids is never pushed to the limit where it can cause pain, it needs to remain safe, comfortable and attractive for children to make progresses.

How To Do The Mountain Pose

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

The Mountain Pose is a great way to learn proper posture, alignment, and balance, and to develop strength in all the muscles needed for upright yoga positions. But we’ll admit: it kind of just looks like standing.
