A Holistic Approach to Pain Relief – Yoga and Arthritis

Friday, October 30th, 2009

YOGA FOR BEGINNERS Pt 1

We’ve all seen it … the severely disfigured finger joints of the elderly. Just looking at it makes you cringe knowing the kind of pain that those joints are causing. And while all arthritis isn’t that severe, even a mild case can cause enough pain to keep you from doing things you love.

So what can be done holistically about the inflammation of joints and the discomfort in the connective tissues that causes mild to severe pain in the joints of so many people?

Well, with a disease that has been around so long, it only makes sense to look for a solution in a methodology that has also been around for a long time … yoga! But how can exercises help when you’re already in pain?

The basic tenets of yoga are actually all that is needed in the treatment of arthritis. Bending exercises and contorted poses are obviously not an option. But it is the practice of breathing and self-awareness that brings arthritis pain relief to so many people.

Chair yoga is actually classified as an aerobic exercise. Any exercise that increases the circulatory and respiratory ability or that causes the heart and lungs to work harder to keep up with the need for oxygen is an aerobic exercise. Even yoga from a chair will do that and with this whole body approach, the immune system is also stimulated.

If you have moderate to severe arthritis pain you really need to consult a trained yoga specialist who can tailor poses to your specific situation. But if your arthritis is still in the mild stages, you can probably find relief by developing your own program by referring to any book or CD available at your public library or online

I jacked my back up while I was in the marines. I have a couple herniated discs, and now arthritis. Is yoga a good and safe exercise to possibly help heal and strengthen the back muscles?

Dreams and Fantasies During Conscious Dreaming

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Also called lucid dreaming, conscious dreaming is a state where you are aware that you are in the middle of a dream and can then start to control the goings-on of the experience. You can do anything that you can imagine while having a lucid dream, as soon as you understand that you are dreaming.

The idea of being able to do anything you want in your dreams is amazing to think about, but anyone can learn to do it. It is not hard at all to do and offers an outlet for living out your fantasies and releasing your hidden desires. You can learn step-by-step proven ways to achieve the state of lucid dreaming.

First, you have to know what your goal is; are you looking to be able to get more enjoyment from your dreams or would you like to use this ability to help you improve your life in other areas? Whatever the reason, decide what it is that makes you want to discover conscious or lucid dreaming.

The next step is to begin practicing the techniques which can produce the appropriate state of mind for lucid dreaming to occur. The first step for most people is dream recall, which is simply training yourself to remember your dreams.

You need to remember the dreams you have every night in order to start conscious dreaming. Try to remember every detail. A good way to do this is to keep a journal of all your dreams. Keep it beside your bed and record everything you can recall about your dreams. Do this every morning when you wake up. Do not wait until later in the day as you may forget. The longer you are awake the more you forget about your dreams.

Keeping a dream diary trains your mind to recall and recognize dreams; this makes it easy to “awaken” during a dream and start asserting control over it.

Hypnosis is another widely used method for lucid dreaming. It is a good way to get into the state of mind you need to begin lucid dreaming. A hypnosis session works quickly to help people to recall the tiniest details in their dreams. This can be done in only a few sessions. Once you have this level of dream recall, you are ready to proceed with conscious dreaming.

You may wake up suddenly when you are having a conscious dream in the beginning. This is not unusual. Go over the events in your dream as you drift back to sleep. If you focus on them hard enough, you will go back into the same dream and perhaps control the events and the outcome of them.

Another method which many find useful for inducing conscious dreaming is to wake up a few hours earlier than normal. Simply set your alarm about two hours early and then go back to bed after awakening. In these last few hours before you are accustomed to waking up, it is much more common to have lucid dreams. These dreams can be hard to tell from simply laying awake and daydreaming! This is a good way to begin conscious dreaming.

Watch your sleeping patterns closely. In this way, you will be able to tell what time is more likely to have this type of dream. Do not deprive yourself of too much sleep, as being extremely tired makes you sleep deeper and lucid dreaming is unlikely to occur in this stage of sleep.

However, you may be glad to find out that lucid dreaming can help to alleviate insomnia and other sleep problems. When you learn how to use the ability of conscious dreaming, you can train your mind to stop the worries which keep you up.

It does not take years of research and practice to learn to control your dreams consciously. It can be done quickly and easily. With a little practice and work, you will be lucid dreaming in no time. Explore your own mind; control your dreams, and so much more.

In fact, conscious dreaming is something that everyone can do. Just practice and use these techniques to develop your own lucid dreaming abilities – you’ll find that it has a lot to offer.
